The clients, a couple of avid cooks, challenged us to design a functional kitchen in the confines of the historic house with no room to spare. By careful arrangement of workflow, use of floor-to-ceiling storage and custom counter-depth refrigerator, and reducing visual clutter we succeeded in creating a space that appears more generous than its square footage and provides unimpeded workflow. By maximizing storage space in the cabinetry we were also able to add a small washroom. The use of light neutral colors complements the vintage dark woodwork, increases the sense of spaciousness, and provides an advantageous background for the display of the owners’ collection of historic pottery.
